How Many Grafts Do You Actually Need? A Practical Guide

5 September 2026 · Bonita Hair Clinic

Graft numbers drive both your result and your budget. Learn how surgeons estimate requirements by zone, why donor supply sets the ceiling, and what a realistic plan looks like.

"How many grafts do I need?" is usually the first question patients ask, and the most common misconception is that there is one correct answer. In reality, graft planning is a range — shaped by the size of the thinning area, the density you want, and how much hair your donor area can donate without being depleted.

Typical ranges by zone

These ranges are planning aids, not prescriptions. Your surgeon measures the actual area and adjusts:

  • Hairline: 700–1,200 grafts — the zone that defines your whole appearance.
  • Temples: 400–800 grafts — often addressed together with the hairline.
  • Frontal zone (behind the hairline): 900–1,500 grafts.
  • Mid-scalp: 800–1,400 grafts.
  • Crown: 800–1,600 grafts — notoriously graft-hungry because the area is round and viewed from above.

Density: the multiplier people forget

You do not need your original teenage density to look full — the eye perceives fullness at roughly half of it, provided the hair is distributed intelligently. Choosing a natural look instead of maximum coverage can reduce your graft requirement meaningfully, leaving more donor supply in reserve for the future.

Why the donor area sets the limit

The back and sides of the scalp contain a finite number of harvestable follicles — typically in the region of 5,000–7,000 grafts across a lifetime, depending on your hair calibre and scalp laxity. A responsible plan spends that budget wisely: priority zones first, conservative density, and a long-term strategy rather than maximum extraction in one session.

This is also why a single session covering up to 4,500 grafts is considered a full-scale procedure — it can address several zones at once, but it should only be planned after a proper donor-area analysis.

Getting a real number

Online calculators — including the one on our website — are useful for orientation. But the figure that ends up in your treatment plan comes from a physical examination: donor density, hair thickness, scalp elasticity, and the pattern and speed of your loss. All of that happens in a free consultation, and it costs nothing to find out where you stand.
